Letters written both in Vermont and Wisconsin discuss the family mercantile business, politics, and society in mid-nineteenth century Madison. Others describe business conditions in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, travel by boat, rail, and stage across the eastern United States in 1853, and the Vilas home in Madison.
